June 25: Root Causes of Hunger and Poverty in the U.S. and Globally

Academy, Updates, Zero Hunger

Today, over 828 million people around the world—and more than 34 million people in the United States—face hunger and poverty every day. But why? What forces and systems have created and sustained these conditions?

Join us Wednesday, June 25 for our second installment of the 2025 Zero Hunger Summer Seminars. In this session, participants will explore the root causes of hunger and poverty in both domestic and global contexts. From economic inequality to displacement from conflict, we’ll examine how hunger is not just about food, but about power, access, and structural barriers. Participants will also learn how organizations, governments, and communities are responding to these challenges.

Topics may include:

  • Low wages and underemployment
  • Conflict as a driver of displacement and food insecurity
  • The rising cost and scarcity of housing
  • Rural disparities in access to resources
  • Breakdowns in food supply chains and infrastructure
  • Barriers to education and land ownership that limit long-term food security

By identifying these root causes, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the complexity of hunger—and the comprehensive, intersectional approaches needed to end it.

Thank You
