Behind every piece of legislation lies a complex web of relationships, negotiations, and informal decision-making that often goes far beyond what’s outlined in textbooks. In this session, participants will gain a real-world understanding of how policy change unfolds on Capitol Hill—and how to engage with it.
Join us Wednesday, July 23 for our next installment of the 2025 Zero Hunger Summer Seminars. Through a panel discussion with deep experience on Capitol Hill, participants will hear firsthand how laws are shaped through strategic advocacy, coalition-building, and the often-invisible dynamics that influence legislative outcomes. The session will explore how food security and anti-hunger policies are advanced—or stalled—in a rapidly shifting political environment.
By the end of this session, participants will:
- Understand the formal steps of the legislative process and how real-life practice differs from procedure.
- Learn how political dynamics, relationships, timing, and negotiations shape policy outcomes.
- Explore how federal nutrition and anti-poverty programs are affected by shifts in Congressional priorities and administrative actions.
- Gain insight into how advocates, constituents, and nonprofit organizations can engage effectively with the legislative process to advance food security policies.
Thank You
