Host a Zero Hunger Intern

The Hunger Center leverages our networks and resources to run a highly competitive recruitment process for the Zero Hunger Interns. In 2019, we received over 400 applications for 12 positions. We focus our recruitment on demographic groups and geographic areas that disproportionately experience hunger, including people of color, first generation college students, and people from the American South.

Hosting a Zero Hunger Intern was a great experience and I would absolutely love to do it again. Our intern was smart, capable, and nimble - all qualities that made her an excellent fit for the ever-changing work of federal policy. If only we could have had her longer! Zero Hunger Interns are highly motivated individuals with a desire to learn and a commitment to ending domestic and global food insecurity. Zero Hunger Interns are paid interns who add capacity to your organization for 10 weeks. They are matched to an organization through a competitive process based on the skills that your organization’s workplan requires. We aim for each placement to be mutually beneficial, in which interns gain experience and expertise while the host organization benefits from the intern’s skills and hard work. Intern work plans focus on program implementation, policy, advocacy, research, development and fundraising, or communications.

The Zero Hunger Internship through the Hunger Center gave us capacity we wouldn't have had. The top-notch student brought in through the program was able to hit the ground running and added value to our team immediately. That's a testament to the Hunger Center team recruiting these students and the stellar job they did in aligning the skills and needs of student and host organization. The Hunger Center provides Zero Hunger Interns with coaching and mentorship support throughout the internship, and quality anti-hunger and leadership training through our Summer Seminar Series.

The Zero Hunger Internship expanded our team’s capacity during the months our fantastic intern was with us over the summer, while also providing a phenomenal opportunity for our intern to learn more about anti-hunger and anti-poverty issues through her placement at our organization as well as the Summer Seminar series for their interns.
